Actors needed for bar play, Cape Town

A bar in Cape Town is looking for actors for a new play written by Richard Kaplan, The Finkelsteins are Coming to Dinner.

Production: One-act, one-hour, two-hander play

Genre: Drama elements of dark comedy. Fast paced, language heavy.

Performance Dates: 28 August – 9 September

Rehearsal Dates: 3-week half-day rehearsals between 7 to 27 August.

Further Performances: Possibly Cape Town Fringe Festival

Payment: Rehearsals and performance fees – enquire on submission of CV for casting.

Auditions: 13 and 14 May. 09:00 – 13:00.

Character in a Nutshell: Repressed gay man to the point of being only partly conscious of his sexual identity – a rugger-loving estate agent.

Brief Description: Selwyn wakes up in the middle of the night to find Gabriel in his kitchen. Selwyn has had a massively traumatic experience and encounters Gabriel in a dream-like space. Selwyn struggles to come to terms with what has happened to him, fills in forms at Gabriel’s request, and reviews his life. Towards the end of the play he almost magically learns to sing and dance in Xhosa (some skills on this front would help). Gabriel enables him to find a resolution to his state.

Character in a Nutshell:

Tall, powerful, commanding God-like presence.

Brief Description: Gabriel can do anything. He can sing, dance, and speak Shakespearean English. As soon as he appears on stage he needs to have a commanding presence. He is half therapist/half police interrogator – through his interaction with Selwyn, he will uncover the truth of the situation, both physically and metaphysically. He is a clear communicator in English or Xhosa. Fast talking when he needs to be.
