Run For Your Wife by Ray Cooney
Directed by Barbara Basel on behalf of Constantiaberg Theatre Players better known as CTP
Audition Date: Sunday 21st October at 2pm and callbacks will be organized if needed.
Audition Venue: The Masque Theatre, 37 Main Road, Muizenberg.
It will be an open group audition. The Masque Theatre, Muizenberg celebrates its 60th birthday in January 2019 and to commemorate this landmark occasion CTP will be mounting the highly amusing comedy “Run For Your Wife”, between 27 March to 6 April 2019 as its fundraising show for the Masque.
This play highlights the exploits of a London taxi driver John Smith, with two wives, two lives and a very precise schedule for juggling them both, with one wife at home in Streatham and another at home in Wimbledon. Trouble brews when Smith is mugged and ends up in hospital, where both of his addresses surface, causing both the Streatham and Wimbledon police to investigate.
Having upset his schedule, Smith becomes hopelessly entangled in his attempts to explain himself to his wives and two suspicious police officers, with help from his lazy layabout Wimbledon neighbour. This exceptionally funny comedy is a fitting accolade to Bertie Stern, the original benefactor of The Masque Theatre, whose passion for theatre led him to leave the Masque in the care of the Cape Amateur Thespian Community when he passed away.
Rehearsals which will be held in the Bergvliet Guide Hall, Glen Alpine Way will begin in November 2018, and will be planned to minimise cast involvement in unnecessary rehearsals, whilst ensuring sufficient time is allowed to ensure the smooth running of the numerous entrances and exits that create both suspense and humour throughout this adult comedy.
If possible, this production will be set in modern-day Cape Town with a cast that is truely representative of our ‘rainbow’ nation
Characters
John Smith Lead 30-50 – A taxi driver who is a very likeable guy, despite the fact that he knowingly commits bigamy. John is unassuming, but quick-witted and extremely inventive with regard to his ‘double’ life and requires an actor with great comic timing who is able to handle physical comedy and witty double entendres.
Barbara Smith Lead 25 - 45 – John’s wife who is amorous and sexy.
Mary Smith Lead – 25 – 45 - John’s uptight other wife whose major purpose is being the perfect ‘homemaker’.
Stanley Gardner - 30 - 50 - The Smith’s upstairs neighbour and John’s best friend. Should have great comic timing and an ability to portray physical comedy.
Detective Sergeant Troughton 25+ – A slightly severe young police detective (male or female) who investigates the discrepancies in John Smith’s story.
Detective Sergeant Porterhouse - 40- 64 – A likeable and bumbling middle aged police detective (could be male or female) who investigates the discrepancies in John Smith’s story.
Bobby Franklyn - 25 - 40+ - The Smith’s upstairs neighbour, a flamboyantly gay dress designer.
Newspaper Reporter 20 – 35 - Eager young reporter. Cameo appearance in one scene.
The aim of this production is to provide a “fun filled romp” for audience, director, cast and crew! If possible, it should provide an opportunity for mounting a truly South African production with a genuinely representational cast and crew.
PLEASE NOTE: This is an amateur production and as such there will be no remuneration to the cast, crew or director.
